The Story Behind the Story

The Magic Zipper was inspired by a very real and very brave little boy— Samantha’s son, (Ashley’s nephew), Colton.

Colton was born with a complex congenital heart defect called DORV (double outlet right ventricle), D-TGA (D-transposition of the great arteries), and multiple muscular VSDs (ventricular septal defects). His heart journey began when he was just days old and has included three open-heart surgeries, with the possibility of more in the future.

At just one week old, Colton underwent his first surgery, an arterial switch, followed by pulmonary artery banding. At nine months old, he underwent his third open-heart surgery, the Glenn procedure.

Through every hospital stay, procedure, recovery, and uncertain moment, we have watched Colton show a kind of bravery that is difficult to put into words. His journey has taught us that courage doesn't always look big or fearless. Sometimes, courage looks like taking one more breath, facing one more procedure, or simply finding a reason to smile.

That is where The Magic Zipper began.

We wanted to create a story that could help children who are facing medical journeys of their own feel seen, understood, and a little less alone. We also wanted to create something for the families standing beside them—the parents, siblings, grandparents, and loved ones who walk every step of the journey too.

We hope The Magic Zipper brings comfort, courage, understanding, and a few extra smiles to children and families navigating similar journeys. Through Colton's story, we hope to shine a light on the incredible bravery of heart warriors and the love, support, and care that surround them.

Because every heart warrior has a story—and every brave heart deserves to be celebrated. ❤️
